Does ‘Not Under The Old Law’ Only Mean Our Salvation Is Not Earned By Keeping The Old Law?

Frequently I run into someone who has the false idea that the many passages that teach we are not under the old law anymore, are all just saying the grounds of our salvation is not keeping the old law (which is true), instead we are saved by grace (the death of Christ) and still should keep the old law (at least parts of it). It is true we are not saved in that “earning basis” sense by keeping any law – old or new (that would require a perfect life). But is that all the pertinent passages are saying? Let’s go through a few of them …

Eph 2:15 says Jesus “abolished in his flesh (death) the law of commandments contained in ordinances.” When the US “abolished” the Federal 55 mile per hour speed limit law in 1995, does that mean drivers were still expected to drive 55 or less on interstate highways?

When Col 2:14 says Jesus “blotted out the handwriting of ordinances … and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross,“ does that mean we still have to keep those ordinances; they are just not the earning basis of our salvation anymore? That wouldn’t make any sense anyway, because saints under the old covenant never earned their salvation by living perfectly their whole life; the death of Christ has always been the basis for salvation – old testament and new (Rom 3:23-26).

Gal 3:19 teaches the law was in effect until the first coming of Christ. According to the view being refuted by this article, that would mean keeping the old law was the grounds of the Israelites salvation during old covenant times, but Heb 9:15-17 definitely refutes that; read it for yourself.

Gal 3:25 says we are no longer under the “schoolmaster” (the law, verse 24). If the 13 colonies/states are no longer “under” the law of England, does that mean they are still expected to obey the law of England?

I think everybody knows the answers to all these questions; I mean who still binds the Levirate marriage law (Matt 22:24-28) today? It is just another one of the many invented ways to get around what the scriptures plainly say. People are more interested in doing religion their way than God’s revealed way, Charlie Kirk’s Sabbath view included.
