How We Know Long Hair Is Not The Only Covering Required By I Cor 11:2-16
Since God is telling a woman to be covered “for an occasion” (while praying) in I Corinthians 11:5 and 13, that proves said covering is put-on-able and take-off-able (with respect to the timeframe of that occasion). That does not match the permanent long hair covering of verse 15. This argument is intended to be proof (conclusive if sound), not just evidence in favor (which can be weak or strong, and inconclusive). Consider some illustrations …
Esther 6:12 reads “And Mordecai came again to the king’s gate. But Haman hasted to his house mourning, and having his head covered.” Was Haman’s covering artificial (temporary) or long hair (permanent)? Most importantly, how did you know which one?
Which of the following six sentences make sense and why?:
· Ethel, be sure and wear a red dress, while at the Alabama football game.
· Ethel, be sure and be skinny, while at the Alabama football game.
· Karen, be sure and be covered, with a hood, while outside riding your bike.
· Karen, be sure and have long hair, while outside riding your bike.
· Lucy, be sure and be covered, with a veil, while praying.
· Lucy, be sure and have long hair, while praying.
Do you see the parallels to I Cor 11:5?
And can’t you tell the covering the leper is to put on his upper lip in Lev 13:45 is an artificial covering (not a mustache)? How did you know?
Do you see that “for an occasion” necessarily implies the “katakalupto” covering of I Cor 11:5 is “put-on-able and take-off-able” (temporary)? That doesn’t match the “peribolaion” (completely different Greek word) covering (long hair) of I Cor 11:15, does it?
