Is It Right To Be Wrong As Long As You Are A Christian?

A brother in Christ recently texted to me “I have noticed that any sound brethren having convictions on contentious issues, their opinion is … viewed as … false” (by me/Pat). This friend and I had been disagreeing on a controversial Bible topic and he wanted me to say both positions were equally valid, and I just couldn’t do that. By his logic, it seems 2 + 4 cannot be 4 and 5 at the same time if referring to our differences with denominational churches, but both answers can be right as long as we are talking about differences between brethren?

According to this thinking by saints, even though we come to different conclusions about matters of right and wrong, we are still both right as long we are both sincere Christians. Of course I think what I teach is right and what is contrary to that is wrong!; I would be a hypocrite (actually a liar – Rev 21:8) if I thought what I believed was wrong, and taught it anyway. Remember, if I think I am right, then by definition I must think opposing views are wrong (John 17:17), and my point is that fact is just as true about differences between brethren as it is true about differences with denominational believers.

Back in about 1986 a good friend asked a gospel preacher in Madison, Alabama a question about the same controversial Bible topic, and the preacher replied “If good scholarly members of the church of Christ disagree on a topic, then nobody is going to be lost over it.” Do you see how their theory is that 2 + 2 can be 4 and 5 at the same time as long as a brother in Christ is the one saying 5? No, only “the truth shall make you free” from sin (John 8:32, Matt 15:14), and that applies to true Christians just as much (if not more so) than it does to the denominations.
