You May Think To Offer Service Unto God

In John 16:2-3 Jesus says about the apostles “an hour doth come, that every one who hath killed you, may think to offer service unto God; and these things they will do to you, because they did not know the Father, nor me.” This is a classic case of people who are doing things they think God wants them to, but it is really contrary to God’s will.

In connection with the above point, I am sure Saul thought he was doing God service when he was persecuting Christians according to Acts 9:1-2. I mean he said later in Acts 23:1 that he had “lived in all good conscience before God until this day.” But that didn’t make it right, did it?

Some more examples …

Wasn’t Uzza thinking he was doing God service in I Chron 13:7-10 when he touched the ark just long enough to steady it to keep it from falling and breaking? But God struck him dead because he touched the ark, something God had said not to do.

Isn’t the gay church thinking they are doing God service, that they are more loving and tolerant, when they uphold gay marriages? But Jesus said marriages should be between male and female in Matt 19:4-6.

Aren’t women preachers thinking they are doing God service when they teach in the church assembly despite what I Cor 14:34-35 plainly says? After all, aren’t they preaching the gospel?

Are congregations that partake of the Lord’s Supper only once a quarter (so the practice want become too common place) thinking they are doing God service, but not actually following the approved example of Acts 20:7?

Don’t priests and preachers think they are doing something good when they “baptize” infants? But we know what God really says about it in passages like Acts 8:35-37, don’t we?

Summary from Romans 10:3 “For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.”
